Limited Edition photographic print from the "Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary" series, ongoing since 2015.
This image was taken shortly after a spring prairie burn. Prescribed burns, also called controlled burns, are an important management tool used by natural resource professionals. Using prescribed fire as a management tool allows land managers to knock back undesirable plants that have emerged from the ground after they have expended much of their energy reserves. Simultaneously, the newly exposed soil can absorb the sun's energy - warming the soil, kick-starting and extending the growing season for warm season, native plants.
The Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary is an urban park located just east of downtown Saint Paul along the east side of the Mississippi River. This park features 450 million-year-old limestone and sandstone bluffs, spring-fed wetlands, excellent bird watching opportunities, rich Native American history, and beautiful views of the downtown skyline and Mississippi River. An outdoor classroom, apiary, and interpretative markers provide added educational opportunities.
